This is a 1992 Talbo, built by a custom coach builder in Florida. Powered
by a modern Ford 5.0 litre engine, the Talbo is a replica of a model built by
the Talbot-Lago car company in 1938.
The Talbot-Lago car company actually built many different kinds of cars
between 1935 and 1940 but it was their 1938 model, called the
Aerodynamica, that inspired the design of this modern Talbo. Only twelve
Aerodynamicas were built and their limited numbers drive their prices into
the stratosphere when they come up for auction. A search for the rare
times when an Aerodynamica has come up for sale shows that the price is
anywhere from $3.5 to $4 million dollars.
The famed American industrial designer Brooks Stevens was so enamored
with the Talbot Lago that he bought one for himself when available to
purchase. He placed that car in his museum in Mequon, Wisconsin and in
the 1980’s, the makers of the Talbo were granted permission by Stevens to
use his car as a template, making sure the details were correct and that the
Talbo would be an exact exterior replica of the Aerodynamica with the
underpinnings of a modern sports car.
The body of the Talbo is made from fiberglass composite using premium
high heat distortion resin. All exterior trim is stainless steel and the leather
covered seats make driving a pleasure. The instrument gauges are made
to emulate the original style and the wood trim is Honduras Mahogany.
True modern comfort and luxury in an exotic form, Talbo’s are indeed niche vehicles that were made in limited numbers.
