1968 Porsche 911T
The 911 is an iconic and easily recognizable design. Its roots go back to 1959 from sketches drawn by Ferdinand Porsche, son of Porsche founder, Ferry Porsche. The 911 was developed to replace Porsche’s first car, the Model 356. In 1963, the new 911 made its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
Originally designated as the 901, French carmaker Peugeot protested on the grounds that in France, Peugeot had exclusive rights to three number car nomenclatures with “0” in the middle; rather than re-brand cars only shipped to France, Porsche changed the name to 911. 911‘s began arriving to America in February 1965 with a price of $6,500. Early cars had a six cylinder, 128 horsepower engine. All cars came with four seats, although the rear two are very small and the cars were usually called 2+2. When production ended for the Model 356 in 1965, Porsche realized there was a market for 4 cylinder cars. Porsche introduced the 912, which is a four cylinder version of the 911. The 912 remained in production until 1969, with a brief rebirth for one year in 1976, as a 912E. T
his particular car has been restored to exquisite detail. It left the factory on June 12, 1968 as an Irish Green/Black Leatherette combination but has been restored to a beautiful Champagne Yellow/Cream Beige. It has a Certificate of Authenticity signed by the President and CEO of Porsche North America. It is a “targa”, meaning the roof section is removable and there is a roll bar behind the seats. It is a fine example of an iconic car.
